Change is not for everyone; is it for you?
Change is overwhelming and the learning curve is steep. That is why the vast majority of people shy away from it. It is uncomfortable to sit in a place that requires you to stretch and grow, and admit that you don’t know much. Certainty is safe and so much more comfortable; it is also the place where you can boast that you are an expert.
Yet this life is all about change; if nature goes through seasons, it makes sense that it is necessary for us too. We have to change to get to the next level; we level up when we change jobs or move houses or start a new relationship. Every level requires a different version of us where we need to think differently and act differently.
New season
It is when you can sit in the discomfort of every new season that a new world of opportunities opens up to you. One year ago, I acknowledged that I was not satisfied with my quality of life in Cape Town. I made the decision to move to Johannesburg. This decision challenged my thinking about full-time employment and forced me to look at other possibilities.
Looking back, it was one of the most terrifying and exhilarating decisions I have ever made. I am incredibly proud of myself for taking it. For standing up and saying this is what I wanted and doing what I needed to do to make it happen in the face of so much opposition.
This journey and what I believe I am capable of would not have been possible without Catherine Wijnberg, CEO of Fetola. I devoured her weekly doses of wisdom and inspiration; they gave me courage and taught me that I just needed to be me – trying to be someone else would not serve me well. That I had a gift and a responsibility to share it with the world. Today I am doing just that and becoming a better version of myself every day.
Mindshift
If it sounds simple, it is not. It is a mindshift that demands honesty, psychological excavation and a good set of lungs for every twist on the rollercoaster.
I am honoured to continue to work with Fetola to build sustainable businesses that have a positive effect on the economy, planet and communities all over South Africa.
